Frequently Asked Questions

What is Fipronil?

Fipronil is an adulticide, meaning it kills the adult parasite. When an adult flea comes into contact with the fipronil, it affects the parasite's nervous system, causing hyperexcitation and death.

This is why you sometimes appear to see 'more fleas' after applying a flea treatment containing fipronil. The fleas become more active before they die.

What is S-methoprene?

S-methoprene works differently. It is classed as an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR). IGRs mimic a parasite's own growth hormones, tricking their body into thinking they can't progress to the next stage of the life cycle.

The adult female flea absorbs S-methoprene through cuticles on her legs. This affects her reproductive system, meaning any eggs she lays will be unable to hatch or die soon afterwards. Any fully developed eggs that haven't been affected by the S-methoprene become coated in it as they fall through your pet's fur. They will die soon after hatching.

As your treated pet moves around your home, they shed hair and skin cells coated in S-methoprene. Flea larvae that hatch from eggs already in the environment will feed on these S-methoprene coated skin cells. They will die soon after ingesting it or, once they've spun into their impenetrable pupal cocoon, will unable to develop any further.
